Plastering & Rendering

Why is my wall taking so long to dry

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.19 PM

I live in a privately rented accommodation and had a lot of damp in my kitchen, the wall was black behind sink unit and plaster was falling off of wet paper around window and on chimney breast. My landlord employed a “builder” who came and dealt with the problem, supposedly, they said they treated the wall with crystals?? and then plastered and when I asked when it would be ok to decorate they said a week or so.. This was December last year, I have had a dehumidifier in my kitchen for the last 5 weeks as my landlord is at a loss what to do,there wasn’t any ventilation in the chimney breast so he put one in as the builder put one in the wrong place. It was September 2017 that the damp was reported to my landlord and the Builder did the job early December 2017, so in reality I have been in this predicament for a long time, I just don’t know what to do any more, it is really depressing. Thank you and sorry for the long drawn out letter but I am desperate. Christine

HI CHRISTINE sorry to hear about your problem. From your description, I believe the works were carried superficially. Due to the long drying period, thes damp issue should be fixed, unless there is still alive sours of water sacked by the wall. Plumbing should be adequately checked (drainage and cold/hot feed )around the wall and inside the floor. all the best Danny nationwide UK construction ltd

Hi agree with danny's awnser, sounds like water ingress from a plumbing issue. If it was ever going to 'dry out then it would have during this year's summer. Clearly an ongoing problem that needs fixing properly

May need tanking or dampproof membrane. Was the wall dot n dabbed ? Or was it fully skimmed without plaster boarding?.and Crystal I've never heard of can you elaborate. I've just done a job same sort of problem the cause was a dodgy valve on the washing machine cold feed which caused damp and the whole wall.to be treated then reboarded then skimmed
