Getting more pressure from my shower.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.59 PM

I would like to have a more powerful/higher pressure shower but is it at simply as buying a better shower? or there limitations from my boiler or water supply I need to take in account? I live in a end Terrance house withI a combi boiler system that supplies the hot water and a electric shower.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, if you are looking at upgrading your current electric shower you'll need to check the supply cable is suitable. Most have a 6mm cable which is ok for around 8.5kw showers but you'll posdibly need to fit a 10mm cable from the consumer unit if you're looking at higher powered showers, best to consult with your electrician as the fuse in the consumer unit could need upgrading too. It's not that simple just to fit a new more powerful shower alot of consideration must be made to be safe. Alternatively you can run a shower off your Combi boiler which will give you a more powerful shower. Easiest way is to fit a bath shower mixer and a riser rail on the wall if you want the shower above the bath. You'll need to fit a non return valve on the top of the mixer to stop back syphoning if the shower head drops in the bath. It's a pretty easy swap and a BSM can be bought for under £100 if you just want something basic, so not a real expense as no tiles disturbed etc

Hi Electric shower pressures vary across the market and are great should your boiler fail, but if not worried a nice bar mixer shower can deliver much higher pressures depending on boiler pressure output

Providing you have a large enough cable to your existing electric shower(10mm required as Dave has stated above) and good water pressure and flow, have a look at the Mira Sport Max with "airboost" I've fitted lots of these and they are good showers, the airboost makes the shower feel even more powerful. If in doubt of cable size, ask a qualified electrician to come quote you to replace the existing shower with a more powerful unit, most will visit for free to check size of cable and can advise you on best practice. Screwfix is the best place to by a Mira sport max, and you can read the reviews. Good luck!

Hi, To achieve a higher water pressure I would remove the electric shower completely and install a bar mixer from your combi boiler. This would give a better pressure and flow rate in most cases but its always best to check your pressure and flow rate before starting such a job.
