Blocking up air vents in 1950s house
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.20 PM
We have ceiling level vents in all bedrooms in our house. They not only let in draughts and noise, but we have also had problems with damp around them. I’ve noticed mould growth directly under and around the vents, and we do still get condensation on the windows despite these massive holes in our walls. All the original fireplaces were blocked up and there are radiators in every room. Seeing as they don’t seem to be doing anything for ventilation, would there be a problem with getting them bricked up? And how would you go about it? Thanks!

Hi, it’s not a problem at all to block them up providing you don’t have a gas fire or boiler that requires ventilation in that particular room.
The only exception would be suspended floor vents, as you need ventilation for the timber floor joists, however, I do block them up on my mother’s bungalow for the winter and then unblocked them in the spring.
Hope this is of some help. David Bowler property maintenance .
