Repair of plasterboard downlight hole.
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.19 PM
Hi.I’m attempting to fit a new downlight in my shower unit as the old one is damaged. I have found that the plasterboard circular hole which the downlight sits in is a bit crumbly around it’s edges (probably from where the downlight has been yanked out previously.) Can anybody recommend a good filler/compound to use to build up and strengthen around the edges of the hole and which at the same time can be smoothed off easily/sanded......Cheers!

This is a very common problem especially in damp areas like bathrooms and showers. There are a few ways to overcome the problem, one is to use a "down light converter plate" which is a larger round metal plate with a hole the correct size already cut into it, less than a tenner and available in different finishes. another is as Jon has said above to cut out a much larger piece of plasterboard and recut the hole for the down light, I would find the nearest joists either side of the existing light and cut back to that then check plasterboard thickness and replace however this involves a lot of work in matching in the plaster and repainting etc. A third option is to use some filler, if your careful you can use wood filler as its stronger than plasterboard filler but I've had good results with "Make Good Plasterboard Jointing, filling & finishing compound" available at B and Q. You can also use some scrim tape to make normal polycell filler stronger.
Good Luck.

You can use FAST SET as a material to harden round the edges. This is available in BQ so easy enough to pick up. Another good tip could be to put small bits of wood round the circle endges inside and a small screw to secure adds so much more strength. Hope that helps

Best to cut a square or circle out oversized. Fit that with some timber battening then recut light. Failing that fill big gap with bonding or gripfill and finish with normal filler
