Am I being scammed on gutter and flat roof repair cost?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.19 PM
I have a small leak from damaged felt under tiles on a pitched kitchen roof that adjoins a flat roof, plus a cracked gutter. I have been quoted £1850 for new gutter (approx. 5 m length with new clips, downpipe etc.) and new thick felt under tiles and a few placement tiles (20-30) and some torch on felt for the flat roof (1.5 metre x 1 metre) and told this is a day's work for 2 x guys. Just researching B&Q gutters @£6.00 + VAT for a 4 metre gutter and torch on felt around £30.00. I feel I am being scammed - really welcome some honest advice.

Hi.
This price you have been quoted is ridiculous. Some roofers are more expensive than others for various reasons.
The materials for your job should be a maximum cost of £250 and that is being generous.
And even if the two roofers were on £200 per day!! his would still only come to £650!!
Tell them to jog on and contact my builder to find yourself an honest roofer.
I hope you found this advice helpful.
Good luck.

Yes sounds like an expensive quote. Without seeing the job it is difficult to know if any complications are being allowed for. We would charge £150-£200 for new gutter (5m-8m) and downpipe(5m) on the front of a property. If the tiles are interlocking tiles around £200, if plain tiles around £400 to re-felt, batten and re-tile a small area of roof(3-4m2) and around £150 - £300 for a small torch on felt flat roof depending on whether it is first or second storey. Total price £500 - £900. That is in North London so I'd expect cheaper prices elsewhere in the country.

this seems abit extreme, its probably pushing it with materials not even costing £70.00, if im honest i would say for the work you have described even £850 would still be abit much and could probably be done cheaper than that.

It's essential to gather more quotes for a fair assessment. Purchase materials independently for cost savings. Get a second opinion from another roofing professional on the extent of the repairs needed. This can help ensure transparency and prevent potential overcharging.
