Repainting over dark paint after a water leak from floor above.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.20 PM

The flat upstairs had a leak in their kitchen, and it ran down the (dark blue) walls in our bedroom. I know to use a Stain Stop paint on the white ceiling, but what do I do about the vertical water marks that are running down our dark blue walls? Do I paint (white) Stain Stop over them then repaint the wall? I've washed the walls with sugar soap, but the marks are still there, and I don't want to just repaint the dark blue only to find the marks showing through! Photos are here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/CeyhikBauSQgDK139 Thank you so much!

Well without actually seeing it first hand you have choices you can zinzeer over it, oil base ie white undercoat over it and then re paint in your chosen colours but you definately have to use an oilbase blocker so the water marks do not pull through as they would if you used a water based product over the effected area .

Good evening, As the post above suggests zinzer is the best product for water damage, the shellac based is best for water damage but can be a little tricky to work with for a diy job. So use the oil based zinzer. My advice would be to make sure the leak has been resolved, give it a few days to dry out. Then zinzer, repaint in specified colour. Best of luck

Zinsser (correct spelling) b.i.n its shellac based. The only zinsser product that will block all stains. Dries in 45 mins. Overcoatable with any paint. For your application apply twice

I would advise to use and oil based stain block or undercoat is just as good ..give a good coat to each stair allow to dry 100% the repaint with emulsion

As long as the wall is dry you will be ok using any oil based undercoat, give light sand to remove any furring and then apply the undercoat with Mini roller and let fully dry, if the stain is still visible you can roll it again with the undercoat, When done paint ceiling and walls as normal. Most of the above advice is correct and zinzer is a good product but if you have any oil based clear varnish this works better on coloured walls as it doesn’t need as many coats with emulsion to cover, obviously a white wall with a water stain would be acceptable with white undercoat to block it out. If you need anything quick drying then I suggest using an aerosol as you can paint over it in 10 minutes.
