Can you lay a bathroom carpet over a cermaic bathroom tiled floor?
Anonymous user 15 March 2024 - 2.44 PM
We have a small(ish) bathroom 2m x 2.6m which is tiled. We want to put a bathroom carpet down (rubber backed). We really dont want to have to pull the tiles up as we arent sure what is underneath and we are working to a tight budget. Can you lay bathroom carpet directly on to tiles, and would this be with or without underlay? Any other suggestions welcome!!
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Of course you can. There are potential issues with laying a carpet on tiles like moisture being trapped between the rubber and the tiles. So you would have to make sure the edges are sealed correctly and the room is aired to avoid bacteria and mold collecting on the carpet. But short answer is yes you can do it.

Its not recommended to have carpet in a bathroom although people do.
The environment its self nevermind how good extraction you may have ,moisture and water splashes etc will eventually
Penetrate and damage underlay and carpet and the smell can be horrendous .
Plus once fitted on top of ceramics you are increasing the height of the floor which if its adjoining another carpeted hallway or room creates a trip . Just my opinion on past experience.

Yes you can have a bathroom carpet over tiles but it must have the correct preperation over the tiles ie.the grout gaps in the tiles need filling in as over time they might show through the carpet but be mindful of moisture and splashes
Have you set your mind on carpet or would you consider fitting bathroom LVT (click vinyl)? It can be purchased with a built in underlay backing and is 100% waterproof if fitted correctly and often offers good grip under foot. It is also extremely easy to cut and fit as well as being very durable.
