Slight movement in 2 tiles in bathroom

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.20 PM

I recently noticed a small crack sound or movement sound when I walk on the tiles in my bathroom and I noticed there is a huge crack on the grouting and a bit of grouting has come off. I’d like to know if I need to remove the entire tile or if I can just remove the loose debris and regrout the gap? I am happy to share some pictures of the crack in grouting if needed.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi , it sounds as if the tile either, has not had sufficient adhesive i.e. [ voids underneath] , non flexible adhesive , incorrect surface to be tiled on. usually when one is loose or cracked or movement in the joint others maybe loose too. The ideal overlay for tiles is a cement based board and definitely not ply.

It’s sounds like there might not be enough tile adhesive on the tile could be causing movement

You should remove the loose grout and see if you are able to lift the tile up. If you can check underneath the tile either someone's done a dot and dab style (which is a no no) or haven't used enough adhesive. Simple remove old adhesive carefully and apply adhesive and grout to finish. Hope this helps

If you don't have a spare tile to replace it with or can no longer get the same tile I would suggest you get a manual grout remover and remove as much grout as you can and regrout providing the tile is still secure if it's not then you may have to take the risk of removing the tile and cleaning as much adhesive off as possible carefully as to not break the tile and restick hope this helps you

Sounds like your floor was not plyed correctly or not a firm surface to fix your tiles You might need to correct the problem with examining the under layer of the flooring to rectify your problem
