Removal of artex - check for asbestos?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.20 PM

I have artex on my living room ceiling that I’d like removed. I am certain it doesn’t contain asbestos but do I need to get this checked prior to getting plastering quotes? If so, what’s the best way to get it tested?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Until the mid-1980s, Artex coating was made with white asbestos to strengthen it. Therefore old Artex manufactured by Artex Ltd will contain asbestos while Artex coatings applied after 2000 may or may not contain asbestos. It would be difficult to say just by looking wether it contained asbestos or not! Any asbestos is safe to stay in place as long as it is not disturbed. So therefore if the ceiling can be plastered without scraping or disturbing the artex then it’s fine to go ahead and plaster. If not get a professional asbestos removal company to take a sample. I hope this information has been some use to you.

Hi. It is essential to check if unsure and if taking the task on by yourself make sure you are wearing appropriate PPE

Not all artex contains asbestos but it’s better to get it checked with a survey at a cost of around £60 to be sure as if it does contain asbestos it will need to be removed under licensed conditions

Yea you should definitely have it checked at a lab I’m pretty sure it doesn’t cost any more than £15 to get it tested

Just a suggestion it might be cheaper and easier if you just skimmed the ceiling with two coats of multi finish plaster.

Yes it is probably best to have it checked out you can never be sure with artex whether it has asbestos even if it has minimal asbestos is still potentially dangerous or you could have the ceiling skimmed flat thanks

Encapsulated then there isnt a problem. But to over-skim an artex ceiling then the high spots have to be 'knocked off' . Once pva'd (twice) then skimmed it is then re-encapsulated. But here's the rub....the knocking off can release fibres into your home. So tested or not what do you do? If the ceiling is sound then overboard....not my preffered route but a route taken by many
