Can I put a hole in a disused chimney breast?

I live in my parents' 1930's terraced house and the chimney in the front room is disused and has been for years. I would like to mount a 42" LED TV onto the breast and, if possible, run the cables to the power supply, aerial, future amp and speakers, laptop, dvd, and so on, into the chimney, down the inside and onto a shelf in the old fire place. My question is this. What, if any, consequences could there be mounting the tv onto the breast? And again, what, if any, consequences could there be knocking a hole through the breast to run cables? I do have other options to mount the tv elsewhere is need be. Thank you for your help and assistance, I really appreciate it.
