Can I use plywood on uneven concrete
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.20 PM
We are planning on using Vinyl sheet flooring for a living room (used to be a stock room) however the concrete is uneven in places. Could we use plywood as a subfloor before fitting the vinyl to create a smooth surface? Or would we need to level it out with more concrete? Thank you for taking the time to read this, I appreciate any advice. Also, we are now looking for someone to fit it for us if interested. Emma Bishop

Hi Emma yes you can install ply to level floor but I would recommend a DPM first for under the ply. Also you would be far cheaper to use a tanking product to seal concrete them use a self level compound. Hope this is a help to yourself

If your just plying the floor no need to dpm as I doubt there is moisture enough to go through ply I agree the better option to dpm and self levelling instead as you will still need to fix the ply and that in itself will take more time and then still need to feather finish the joins and fixings of the ply so smooth enough to take your vinyl

No Emma you shouldn’t be using plywood on the concrete.
You need to test for moisture? If sub floor is older then 1965 it won’t have a damp proof membrane under it. Fine if not on ground floor.
You then need to get it primed and a smoothing compound laid.
