Questions about SWA at front of house.

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.41 PM

Hi all, Not a pro, just a DIYer. I already have an external socket setup (all part p compliant at the front of the house). I wanted to add an addtional socket on the other side of the driveway. I have run a length of SWA from the existing socket gland box to a IP rated switch and from that to the other switch on the otherside of the driveway. All the cabling is above ground and attached via cleats to brick walls. Distance from the ground is from about 5cm to above 15cm. Note I couldn't bury the cable under the driveway, as it's all paved. Questions: I've used IP rated glands from screwfix (all plastic) and it's all a tight fit. I think I am supposed to earth with one of the those metal glands (so the WA is earthed)? I thought that would only be necessary if it's buried. Is that the case? Anything else I should be doing/missing?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You should have used outdoor brass glands and got an electrician to do it. Making off an armoured gland properly can only be done if the right stuff is used.

Yes you should have used brass IP rated glands and make sure that both ends are glanded and connected to earth via the banjo provided with the gland pack.

I think this is one of those jobs outside of the scope of a DIYer, you have made a couple of errors and should seek professional advice. And new circuits outside will need to be signed off
