Wiring extractor fan to a dimmer switch

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.43 PM

Initially I was going to install: - Downlights on ceiling - Wall lights - Extractor fan with a pull cord switch. Bought a 2 gang dimmer switch thinking I'd use one gang for the ceiling lights and the other one for the wall lights. Now plans have changed and I'm going to install: - Downlights - No wall lights - Extractor fan My question is: Could I use one gang for the ceiling lights and use the second gang for the extractor fan (instead of the pull cord switch)? Thank you in advance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, unfortunately you cant switch an extract fan via a dimmer switch, reason being the fan itself works on a constant current setup, with a dimmer switch you are increasing and decreasing the voltage via the electronic motor in switch. it can only be installed from a rocker switch or pull cord. Hi, Yes you can but you will need to swap out the 2nd dimmer module unit inside your new switch. I would also swap your other dimmer module if you are using LED's. Take your new dimmer switch, pull off the knobs, undo the 2 bolts, then remove the 2no dimmer modules. Fix a 'varilight v com' trailing to edge dimmer module to the 1st switch: https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/VLMKP100.html Fix a dummy dimmer 'varilight on/off only' dimmer module to the 2nd switch: https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/VLSM.html Replace the knobs from your new switch. I would recommend using an 'Envirovent silent 100T' as they perform well, are quiet and carry on running for a predetermined time after you switch it off to clear condensation after your shower. This will need a 2nd live to the fan (switched live/permanent live/neutral/earth). Regards, Laurence
