viessmann vitotrol 100 uta-rf - thermostat - how does it work?

Hi all, I was wondering if i can get some advice on the above thermostat. It came with the house we just bought but i am not sure how to use it or if it works. I have watched some tutorials online but one question remains - how do i even know it's actually working? We turned the heating on manually and i have set this up to 20 degrees when we are in and 14 when we are not and for the night. The light switch is never on, so i doubt it works. I changed the batteries as well but there is no change. Is it just broken? Sorry if the question sounds silly but any help would be appreciated. Many thanks, Lydia
