Can water hammer issue with washing machine damage plumbing?

Pipes have banged when running the washing machine since we moved in (and installed the W/machine new). Now the pipes in the bathroom are also making a terrible clanging noise when the washer runs. I’ve read that I probably need a water hammer arrester but am useless at diy and am also worried that by ignoring the banging for the past year, that I’ve done more damage to the plumbing. I’ve tried to get a plumber out, but so far no one seems interested. I’m too worried now to run my washing machine. Do I have cause to worry?

This can be a simple fix
To a valve not fully open ie stopcock
Loose pipework
Or even a fault with new type taps in the house hold unless fully investigated there
Can be a few different resolves my last water hammer issue was the actual water meter the waterboard had installed it was faulty also preasure within the property dropping back hammering valves shut

Hi Marueen.
Yep, when the washing machine fill valve slams shut it dramatically stops the water flow in the "blue" pipe which is likely about 3 or 4 foot long and just sitting there loose. It shudders and makes a bang sound through out the house pipes.
Easy fix allegedly, just turn down the washing machine tap valve a bit... try about 1/2 open.... and if you can secure the loose blue pipe to something using some tie-clips.
Works for me... most of the time.
