Deteriorating sealant around PVC Windows and insulation foam between Windows

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.59 PM

Several of our windows installed around 2013/14 have gaps where the sealant is has come away from the Windows, is this normal for Windows after 3 to 4 years. Also we have drafts coming through our bay Windows which I'd assumed were insulated behind the plastic finishing, is this something that deteriorates or have the fitters just not filled it up enough? Thanks

Dear Lawrence, The installer should have provided you with a warranty. On uPVC is around 10 year warranty depending on the manufacturer/installer. There should not be any air coming through the window, except if it is coming from trickle vents or other mechanism which allows to ventilate the room. I hope this helps.

There should definitely not be any draught coming through the sides of your window, should be sealed with silicone and possibly foamed if there is a big gap. Foam does break down eventually but usually lasts around ten years. We offer this service, Amongst lots of other services. Hope this answer was useful. Craig mills

Contact the supplier of the windows on the problem that you have , all windows that were installed should of been foamed and trimmed and sealed inside and out. As said on previous response some draught may come through the trickle vents if they are opened ( if closed you may still experience a small air flow), otherwise you can check your seals on the openers of the windows with a credit card to see if the hinges are pulling in correctly on the openers. Many thanks.

Hi, it is not acceptable for mastic to shrink, the wrong mastic/silicone has been used. the only way to rectify would be to REMOVE existing mastic and apply new. By applying mastic/silicone over the shrunken mastic would cause more problems. There shouldn't be drafts coming in at any part of the window. Remove trims need to be removed, re-foamed, siliconed and trims re-applied. Many thanks.

Best off having the poorly sealed windows re sealed again. They should be foam filled first then sealed with correct silicone. Check behind the centre trims of the bay window there should be Aluminium posts they may have failed install these.
