Damp patches on unused chimney breast
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.59 PM
We have some damp patches that appeared on a chimney breast in the back room of out Victorian terrace - the chimney is not in use and has been closed up many years ago , before we moved in, and has a couple of vents in different places. In about July this year I had some work done to cap the chimney with vented pots, repointing and reflaunching(?), but the patches don't seem to be drying out. How long should I leave it to see if that has solved the problem, and if not, any ideas about what to try next? Thanks

Sounds like salt contamination from the historic burning of fossil fuels.
Google "sulphur contamination of chimney breast" and it should give you an idea if thus is the cause.
