Rendered brick or cement mould for low wall in garden?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.20 PM

The wall in the side return of my garden, on the side of the fence, is in a very sorry state. It is now exposed but used to be hidden by decking which I have removed. I want to have this wall repaired and made to look smooth. It is very low, about 25cm at the start and tapers out to about 35 at the other end (about 5 metres) before it starts curving round towards the edge of the lawn. In the curve it becomes a retaining wall for a low flower bed. My question is: Is it better to build/repair the wall with bricks which then can be rendered? If yes, what brick is best to make the render ling lasting? Or Should I build a mould and make the whole thing out of concrete, seeing as it curves around and is supposed to look smooth. I just want to make sure that it lasts, and that if brick is used, I'm not setting the whole thing up to fail because the render won't last. I hope this makes sense! Any advice GRATEFULLY appreciated Sandra

make it either in concrete or double skin brickwork but before rendering make sure to dig soil from rear of the wall and put a damp proof membrane between soil and the back of wall otherwise the moisture and damp will penetrate and eventually make the rendering look poor or worst case fail eg become delaminated crack etc

I agree in the first post i would look to drill some weep holes as an extra.
