Damp in upstairs bedroom?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.41 PM

I live in an old terraced house and am concerned about a corner of the front bedroom wall. There is a built in wardrobe in the corner where my concerns are. The internal of the wardrobe is hollow (the outer frame os fitted to the wall with sliding doors etc). The wall inside the wardrobe has lining paper which I have peeled back, I can't work out if it is just cold or damp, the plaster underneath isn't crumbling. Understandably the wall is very cold. Damp is always on my mind so I have used a damp trap in the wardrobe which hangs up and I have one in the window as condensation builds up. I also make a point of having the window open. A neighbour had her downpipe from the guttering cleaned and menationed the workmen had noticed a crack in mine which I am going to have repaired . I also have a cream carpet which was already fitted when I moved in which is grey around the edges. My questions are: is this all connected? Do I need a damp proofing specialist or can I self remedy? Will this affect anything else such as structure or rot floorboards? Thank you 😊

Hi In a direct answer to your question I would suggest you get a specialist surveyor in to have a look. My reasoning for this is that from what you are describing it could be penetration dampness from the cracked guttering or other external defect, condensation due to a cold spot being created by the cracked guttering, condensation due to poor ventilation. Also you ask whether it would affect the timbers etc. This is impossible to say without assessing the cause and extent. Joe
