Painting & Decorating

Advice please re. exterior painting and weather conditons.

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.19 PM

I have some hardwood exterior plywood on my gable end. It faces south east. It has been undercoated with a water based paint. Now the weather has turned cold and wet. I am worried because it will be difficult to finish painting it now. How long after rain should I wait to paint the next coat? Also it says on the tin to not paint below 10 degrees C. Do I need to stay strictly above 10 degrees? If I manage to paint at 10 degrees, does it matter if it turns colder over night? Does it matter if there is a strong cold wind? Thanks.

Hi. You would be better painting it with a msp (multi surface paint) these are water based quick drying coatings. The origional and still the best for me is sadolin superdec In terms of temperature, you can still paint with them at this time of year but consider carefully at what time of day you do. Not early as you want the ambient temps to rise, but not late either. I.e approaching dark, temps drop a lot then. Best of luck

I wouldn't leave the timber just with the water based primer on, as soon as you have a good dry day, I would give it a couple of coats, of a good quantity undercoat, dosent matter if its just under 10c,the cold will affect the gloss top coat, by knocking the shine of it, hope this helps

Hi , I would recommend when the weather is dry and warm enough repaint using an oil based exterior undercoat then when dry an oil based topcoat .
