Insulation

Loose insulation

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.41 PM

We want to upgrade our loft insulation in the house we recently moved into. It’s currently got loose green insulation which gets everywhere and makes it a nightmare. We want to make it as energy efficient as we can and guessing the insulation is pretty old and tired as was recommended to be ugraded on surveys and epc etc. What am I looking at to remove all the loose stuff and replace with new? Maybe board the loft as well? A rough guide would be great or is it an easy job to remove it ourselves? Thank you

Best thing would be get some paper suits and the insulation gets very itchy and some face masks mby even gloves. Then get some black bags and bag it in the loft space its self. Once bagged leave overnight for the dust to settle and not be dragged into the house. As for laying the new insulation it comes in long rolls. 100mm,150mm, 200mm thick use a handsaw to cut the thickness between the joists ie 300mm wide. The. Another layer at 90’ to the joists to help the r rating of the insulation

It's not so much of a difficult job to undertake, but it can be very dusty and itchy! Like previously advised, it is best practice to bag the old insulation in the loft space and leave until the next day. You can pick up full body paper suits in most DIY shops. Gloves and mask are a MUST! The better quality face mask, the better, if anyone within the house has allergies, they can be set off quite easily with the fibres from the insulation. Boarding out the loft is a great way to add some extra storage (although check you insurance policy to make sure you are covered with items in the loft) and easy to do. You can pick up packs of 3 loft boards for about £7-£8 which will cover approx 1.1m2. They are tongue and groove so fit together nicely, just make note of where your joists are and any electrical cables running over the loft before attempting to screw them down. Good luck!

Another option would be to roll out fresh insulation over the top, even if the old insulation is a bit dirty it will still be quite effective. I would normally reccomend adding around 200mm as a top up if you have one layer of insulation around the level of the joists, you should then end up with around 270mm to 300mm and this will be compliant to current regulations.
