Heat Sensors: Are they a requirement

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.41 PM

I live in a Victorian house converted into flats prior to 1991. I am advised we are required to have a Grade A:LD2 coverage in the communal parts(which we have) and Grade:D:LD3 in each flat. We already have individual smoke alarms, but have to have the heat sensors that need to be interlinked with the main system. Is it a requirement that we have sounders within the flat as well, or does this only apply to HMO's? Regards, Beryl

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Beryl, BS5839 stipulates that Grade D is a 'System incorporating one or more interlinked mains powered smoke alarms (and heat alarms if required), each with an integral stand-by supply. The interlink can be hardwired or radio-interlinked.'. And that LD3 is 'A system incorporating detectors in all circulation spaces that form part of the escape routes from the premises'. If you have smoke / heat detectors within each flat that are interlinked and have mains power (and backup battery) and these smoke / heat detectors are installed in the escape routes, you should be good. Hope this helps!
