Insulation

Rockwool Loft Insulation in our cavity walls (help!)

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.19 PM

Hi, We’ve been at the mercy of, let’s say, a builder with questionable morals and practices. We are approx 1/2 way through our renovation and extension and have had to remove him from site. Amongst other things, we’ve found out that he’s used Rockwool Loft insulation for all our cavity walls. We really don’t have the finances to take all the walls down as our funds were drained by our previous builder, but we still need a house. Is there anything we can do to “top up” this insulation (rather than tear down and replace) which is cost effective? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, I am assuming that if you are building an extension then you have filed a notice with your council Building Control department? Most councils I have dealt with are quite helpful. The cavity wall insulation is there to achieve a certain U-value. The Building Control Inspector may be able to advise you on what additional insulation is required. This may be XPS or PIR insulation on the inside of the walls or "space blanket" insulation under a layer of plasterboard. It will add addition cost, but less than ripping down the walls and restarting.
