Levelling a floor

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

Half of my floor is vinyl tiles (maybe asbestos) the other half is concrete only (tiles have previously been removed). It also has a couple of deep channels (30/40mm deep). My aim is to cover the entire floor using a levelling compound to flatten it ready for either vinyl or laminate flooring. My questions are... should i fill in the channels with a concrete repair mix kit (seen in wickes & B&Q for about £8) and put levelling compound over the top? or just buy a levelling compound that will set at such depths (mapei ultra plan - up to 40mm)? is there a difference? Also, what floor levelling compound would you recommend? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, First off I would get someone in who is qualified to test/remove the asbestos. Secondly I suppose it depends on the width of the channels if they are substantial I would suggest using the concrete repair kit you mentioned. But you can also buy a self levelling compound from Topps tiles that can fill depths of 50mm so pretty sure it will fill the 2 channels you Mentioned. It cost anything from £18 a £40 depending on the type. Would be wise to start with the channels first making sure they are completely filled as to avoid any craters

You want a moisture tolerant screeding compound like Laybond ultimate , ardex Na , fball stopgap 1200 which you mix with some granno Chips to fill the holes. Then a moisture test should be taken and I’d recommend a liquid dpm to the floor before a prime and screeding compound on top.
