What is the most cost effective way of decorating old walls covered in wallpaper?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.19 PM

Our hallway and landing have high ceilings with unfortunately peeling, very old wallpaper. We recently underwent a total rewire on the house, leaving a few patches of plaster throughout. This has accelerated the wallpaper peeling, and in some cases it's even bubbling. If we ever want to sell the house we will absolutely need to decorate, but we have no idea how much work/what the cost would be for something like this. We don't know what the wall condition is like underneath, but the house is old, and some areas of the wall appear to be old and crumbling, so I'm worried this would require significant plastering to decorate. What's the process here? What kind of approximate cost are we looking at? Is there anything we can do ourselves to save on cost? For example, I can remove the wallpaper myself (it'll take an age, but it's possible), and I'm happy painting the walls myself. The issue is the potentially unknown amount of plasterwork needed given the large area. Is there any way we can cut cost, or do it in sections over a longer period of time? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Joanna, We could happily assess your property free of charge and let you know the condition, then it puts you in a better place to form a solution. Once problem & solution are determined you can then go about attaining quotes for the work, Kind Regards, Sean Arena Building & Landscaping

Hi Joanna, There are a few routes you could take to resolve these issues for example removing old paper and applying lining paper then painting which would be a lot cheaper than plastering but of course this is purely speculative as I would need to see the condition of the walls in person before giving a plan of action. We would be happy to come and have a look and give you a quote. I'm sure we can find a solution within your budget. Kind regards Antonio

The best way forward for you is to carry on and thoroughly strip the walls. Try to not dry strip but wet and preferably with a steam stripper. But try to not hold it on one place on the walls for too long or it could blow the plaster Then its a case of evaluation. The costly but sure solution is to hack it all off and re-render/plaster. But thats not always viable esp when you're living there. Try and get a good experienced decorator to have a look/quote. There are viable methods of treating old walls in-situ and bringing them back to standard with carefull prep and application of non-woven lining papers such as wallrock

Carry on stipping wallpaper off but try using warm soapy water rather than a streamer first as the steamer will soften the surface more. Try an just use the steamer for the impossible area which arnt coming off. After stripping assess the exstent of the damage most decorators can patch walls to a fasion. If the walls are in nkt so bad of a conditon after being preped then apply lining paper if there worse for where Pply a blow vinyl and paint
