Damp Proofing

small black mould spots in dry wall in 1980 timber frame house

Anonymous user 28 February 2024 - 3.40 PM

First I found black mould under one window seal in bedroom - not too alarmed and used mould killers to get of it. Started to prepare bedroom walls for painting and the paint came off like wallpaper! Then noticed walls felt damp and there was a musty smell and little black spots of mould(?). Bought house four years ago and as survey recommended new soffit/facicias got them replaced two year ago. The room has been a victim of condensation as I don't shut bathroom door...... but I do now. What should I do before decorating room? Just use mould repellent paint on properly prepared (dust free) drywall -or gate a professional in to investigate?

Hi. It is likely that condensation alone could have caused this in my experience If you have now eliminated the issues that created the condensation then you should be able to now re-decorate. A few tips, If any of the dry wall has suffered any damage due to softening etc but is now dry you can apply a product zinsser gardz. This hardens the dry wall for filling, painting etc. If there are any areas where mould was and you suspect might suffer re-growth ( you often wash away the mould but spores can remain) then apply 2 coats of zinsser b.i.n. this blocks the spores. There are plenty of anti-condensation (coo-var) paints and paints that inhibit the growth of mould. Zinsser permawhite and rustoleum ive found the best
