Retaining/repairing cornice on an L&P ceiling

Anonymous user 15 March 2024 - 2.43 PM

While removing the plaster off a L&P ceiling my builder damaged some of the cornice. I've had an estimate from a cornice specialist; he's suggested that I get the ceiling re-boarded and skimmed before he comes in to effect the repairs. The laths are still in place. Is it possible to board over the laths and then skim or should I risk further damage to the cornice and remove all the laths? If I do remove the laths how should I make up the difference in depth of modern board and skim vs L&P? Thank you. Steve

You could break the plaster off and attempt to board direct onto the lathes trying to fix to the joists. Depending on how deep you need to go you could put up a 12.5 mm plasterboard and apply a coat of bonding before plastering over. It all depends on the thickness. I would use a multi tool to cut around the line of the cornice

where repair is concern, boarding over lath & plaster is a norm... however, if you need to remove the plaster due to excess damage using a 12.5 plasterboard minimised the thickness required, and can be bonded to cover further thickness.
