How to widen doorway / remove part of external wall

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

Hi there, I was wondering if someone might be able to help me out - we're considering knock out some walls in our house to make some of the ground floor open-plan. We have a rear kitchen extension, and I wish to knock out some walls so our dining room flows into the kitchen. You can see from pics below - I want to knock out the internal wall to the left (which should be straightforward, it's hollow) Then as you can see in second pic, knock out part of the second wall, which is an old external wall - approx 110cm. My question is - will I need steels, or will doorway lintel suffice? How big a job is this (live in East London)? The space above the current doorway seems to be very hollow, so don't know if a steel is currently in place anyway? The external wall in the kitchen is most defo brick all the way through

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If the wall is load bearing, meaning it has to support the the joists to the first flooer than any opening will nee a sleep ti tske tge weight an special props to take the weight prior to putting the steel in. If the wall isnt load bearing u should be able to take the hole wall down without needing support only a lintle would be needed if u wanted a door way to tie the 2 sides of the wall from the door togeather

Hi you will need structural calculations done by a engineer if it’s load bearing and also Apply for a building notice from your local council .the engineer will do a drawing with what’s required
