Can a VAT registered client claim VAT from non VAT registered plumbers receipts?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.18 PM

I am a non VAT registered plumber. I recently invoiced a client for a large bill of works completed. I included in materials section of invoice a marked up price on goods paid to cover petrol/time for collection. Client has now requested all receipts for materials in order to claim VAT back? Is this legal? Furthermore I do not have all receipts to cover full material cost (due to markup by me and shoddy bookkeeping!) If it is ok for client to claim back VAT shall I just provide him with as many receipts as possible and then explain shortfall as loss of receipts plus the use of materials I already had in stock? Any advice much appreciated Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If they wanted to claim any VAT back then this should have been raised at the quoting stage, are you VAT registered? They won't be able to claim VAT back from your material purchases as the reciepts will have your company details on them, not theirs, the money would have come from your bank account, not theirs so they wouldnt be able to explain it properly, you'll need the receipts for your own books also, so if you do provide any receipts they will have to be photo copies, not originals.

Hi no they can not as you are not VAT registered, also they have no right to see your costings whether marked up or not, if they wanted to claim VAT back on the items then they should have purchased themselves, It is very unlikely they are individually VAT registered anyway, you could start by asking for there VAT number and run a quick check through google to confirm they are not just trying it on to see what you have paid.

No they can't. The receipts are for your accountant or your books. Their receipt is your invoice. If you gave them a price, then they have no right to see receipts. If you did it as labour plus materials then yes they can red receipts. Just explain your receipts go straight to your accountant and to get copies it will cost £100 plus for admin time.
