Used silk emulsion for mist coat on new plaster

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.42 PM

I made the cardinal error above, used a roughly 50/50 mix. Presumably I need to sand it down, how severe does this need to be? I don`t want to risk ruining the plaster. Thanks for any advice. Thanks for the replies, I have sanded one wall down but stopped when advised! I have given this wall a thin mist coat as some of the sanding went back to the plaster itself, so hopefully all OK with the top coats in the next week or so.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, I usually use a watered down matt emulsion paint so that you can see any blemishes that require filling. There shouldn't be a problem with using silk for the mist coat as long as you have let the silk down with water, so it can absorb into the new plaster, but without seeing a picture of it I can't make a proper judgement. On new plaster, I usually apply 3 coats of emulsion which should cover the new plaster. Hope this helps! Dave

Hi. I would say you will be ok with this. The critical part of mist coating is the dilution of paint/water, if you have used a 50/50 mix then that should have been absorbed by the plaster. So rubbing it diwn wont achieve anything. The effect of using a silk emulsion is that its likely obliteration of the plaster will not be good. I always use paint for new plaster, for a number of reasons, one of which is obliteration
