Can a roof leak can wait 2 days to be fixed?

Anonymous user 15 March 2024 - 2.42 PM

Hi! We just had our skylight glass changed, and the following day rain started. We find out that there is a leak in the roof. Obviously, it is a Saturday evening and no one can come until Monday morning! What kind of damage we will expect for those 2 days? (obviously, the forecast predicts rains...) Thanks for help!! Barbara

depending on how bad the leak is will depend on the amount of water ingress one thing for sure, it will take more than a couple of days for everything to dry out even although its the weekend it could have been covered to try and stop any water ingress.

Hello in my experience, it would depend on the volume of rain we have, but 2 days is long enough to cause a problem with enough rain , I'm sure someone will work on the weekend as we work 6 days a week and Sunday if it's an emergency. (With no call out charge) so hang in there I'm sure someone can help you. Kind regards Alfred 😁

The best cause scenario is just a damp ceiling and staining, but as others have said above all depends how much rain we get and how it is getting in and where it’s sitting and trying to escape from if it can at all. Worse case your ceiling might collapse if the rain full is heavy enough and it’s really leaking through and the water can not escape from the ceiling if you start to notice a large bulge appearing I’d take a photograph for legal reasons and for insurance purposes and then make a small hole with a knife or something sharpe to allow the water to flow out this will stop it bursting and collapsing your ceiling. You might also have some electrical damage to any light fittings in the area effected but theses are all worse cause scenarios but the first one I mentioned is the most likely. I’d advise don’t panic at all just keep an eye on it if it starts to look like your ceiling going to fall in clear the area and room. I’d also ring the person who’s changed the glass and get them out any professional company should come out regardless if it weekend bank holiday or whatever if you have water coming into your property I myself think it’s morally wrong and possibly legally not to come out to stop the water I always say put yourself in the client shoes and think how upset destressed they going to be. If they refuse then start ringing round all your local roofing companies somebody will come out I’m very coincident of that they will most likely charge a emergency call out fee though theses can be quite expensive sometimes they won’t charge though depending on circumstances as it’s brilliant public relations and building reputation. I’d also not pay the person who changed the glass and if they get shady threaten them with legal action for damage caused to your property they will back off then. Hope you get this sorted

From experience you have not just changed th roof light because it was old. Therefore if it still leaks - was the initial problem with the roof light or something else? It is easy to blame others for underlying issues with your roof.....

depending on how much rain is coming in. you should have no leaks if all work is complete you should never leave a roof open overnight allways make sure it temporay water tight.
