Is my hot water supply man enough for a power shower

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

As part of a bathroom renovation I wish to upgrade my shower. I currently have an electric shower which has served me well but is too weak in winter due to the incoming mains temperature and too hot in the height of summer even at the lowest power/max flow. I want to get a powerful shower of the type you experience in a hotel - the type that nearly takes your skin off! I have a standard gravity water system with a 140l vented hot tank (with immersion heater built in that we have rarely used) in the upstairs airing cupboard and a cold storage tank in the loft. I realise I can go for either a mixer shower with pumped water supplies or go for the simpler power shower unit with the pump built in. My overriding concern is I have three teenage kids, who would probably drain the hot water in minutes. There are times when we all have showers one after the other. How can I gauge if my HW tank is big enough, if my boiler can replenish it quickly enough or if I'm going to need to upgrade the system? Is there a power shower unit that also heats the water like an electric to get the best of both worlds?

Hi Andy If you have the room, a separate twin impeller shower pump would be the better option as this opens up more options for design of shower valve and fittings. As for the hot water demand this can vary enormously. As you are aware of the possibility of upgrading my suggestion would be to see how you get on with what you have. Your boiler should be ok at reheating your hot water cylinder as long as it is programmed to be on whilst there is high demand. If you find you fall short of hot water then a solution would be to replace the hot water cylinder with one designed for quick recovery. Additionally if you live in a hard lime scale area and your hot water cylinder is some years old it could be inefficient from the build up of scale, therefore another reason to upgrade. Regards Roy

If your heating can reheat water ok & your hot storage is ample, a tip for your main cold water tank is you can fit 2x ball valves with larger jets to ensure adequate supply.
