Removing existing layers of varnish from wooden worktops
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.40 PM
Over the last 4-5 years we have a significant build up of Danish oil on our oak wooden worktops despite sanding and re-oiling every 6-9 months. They are now very 'tacky' and anything and everything sticks to them. I want to know the best way to remove the layers of varnish so that I do not clog up the sander. I've heard white spirit works - but I'm worried that this is toxic and not the best thing to be putting on a food prep area. I would really appreciate some advice!! Thank you :-)

White spirt will only work if it's an oil base stain or varnish I would recommend just giving a right good rub down

I’ve used a electric sander on all the worktops I’ve had to re varnish and it worked great useing a more harsher sandpaper to start off with such as 120 grit and a finer sandpaper to finish the job off
