How best to lower height of floor joists?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

A number of floor joists have been replaced around our bay window at some point, and they are higher than the original joists under the rest of the floor. There's a really noticeable upward slop to the bay. Can the newer joists be planed down in situ? We're in a top floor flat of a Victorian tenement. Many thanks, Caitlin

Joists can be planed in situ so long as the floor span permits. Building regs dictate joist dimensions with referral to overall floor span and centres of floor joists. If floor joist dimensions are at their minimal limit, the only way to lower a section of floor is to alter the wall pocket where the joist is secured. This could cause disturbance to the ceiling below (If there is a ceiling). This option is a bigger job than just playing the tops of the joists but may be necessary to keep within building regs guide lines. I hope this helps
