Can we use nail on laminate

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

I had new laminate put. But the fitter used nails-the one from that gun type machine, to fit door threshold. So basically nailed to 12 mm laminate . Is that fine. Will it destroy the laminate in the future. ? Thank you

Hi there, in no case you should use nails for laminate floors. The best way that could be done is to use glue (for wood). Another important thing is not to install next to the wall, so make sure you leave a small gap (ex. 2cm), this will avoid the floor to pump up in the middle after a while.

It creates an anchor point, sorry to say but your laminate is ruined unless you remove the plate now before any real expansion or contraction starts.

I’m not sure the 2 answers are quite right! If the flooring is continued from one room to the next without any cuts between the doorways then you don’t need to put in thresholds, the only reason you would put thresholds in is to hide cuts or if your going from laminate to carpet/tiles etc. Yes you leave a 5-10mm gap around the outside of the flooring so it doesn’t cup over time and is able to expand and contract. Did the skirting boards get taken off and then the flooring went down and then the skirting back on? Or did he use a beading around the side? If he used a beading and nailed it to the shirting then that’s fine if he nailed the beading to the flooring then that’s wrong. If you need any more advice or explanation then please contact me.
