Outdoor sockets- RCD protection or not when fuseboard is RCD protected?

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 2.58 PM

I am confused about whether or not I need to choose an outside socket with RCD protection. We have a modern fuseboard that has RCD so does that mean that it is not required on the outside socket? I have been advised both ways by two separate people so am unsure what to do. Safety is a high priority for us but am told it could cause problems to have the outside socket have its own RCD.

No RCD protection is needed on the actual external socket providing that circuit is protected by a 30mA rcd which most modern consumer units have.

Providing you have an RCD protecting the circuit the outside socket is going to be connected to, rated at 30mA(the RCD will say this on the front), then you do not need an RCD on the outside socket itself. most modern consumer units will have 2 separate RCD's protecting a row of circuits each.

Just make sure the outdoor socket is fed from an the circuit like a ring main. Using a ip56 housing and a normal basic socket face is fine best to get it tested if your using equipment outside Rcd tripping in time and electrically safe for disconnection times.

Confirm that the circuit supplying the socket has RCD protection some boards are split load or have a section for non RCD circuits. No RCD protection is needed on the actual external socket providing that circuit is protected by a 30mA rcd which most modern consumer units have.
