Bricklaying & Repointing

Gable end terrace with penetrating damp issue

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.18 PM

Our 1895 gable end terrace wall has an additional wall built adjacent to it to just under the first floor. We have researched old maps and this wall was possibly there before the house was built! And it looks that way! There have been attempts to stop the dampness coming through internally by calling the wall in slate with concrete and then slapping some black tar paint over the top, needless to say this isn't working anymore and we have serious brick salts coming through internally and the tiles in the kitchen have blown. How should be tackle this wall? Should we remove it? And be prepared for whatever is hiding underneath? Should we repoint and render? With lime mortar/render to allow the wall to breath? What should we use to cap it if we decide to render? Any advice would be appreciated or any other ideas?

Hi Very difficult to give you accurate advice without seeing the area of concern but what I will say is bitumen paint (black jack) and the like is a big no-no. If creating internal damage you would probably be looking at some form of cementitious waterproof rendering to protect the internal finishes. But this can prove detrimental on older properties. As I say it's difficult to point you in the right direction without a full assessment. Joe
