how to check if each tile is fully backed by adhesive

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.19 PM

Hi is there a way of checking whether large porcelain tiles (295 x 595) have been fully backed by adhesive to ensure there are no pockets where there is no adhesive? What i mean is that to ensure proper adhesion, the adhesive should be touching the full tiles, rather than a dot and dab method. Please correct me if I am wrong, but if the tile has adhesive covering all parts of the wall behind the tile,s then the grout also has something to adhere to rather than just sitting in the gaps between the tiles from where it could otherwise get dislodged over time and create gaps/holes. Or have I misunderstood how this should work? Any advice would be appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

a lot of diy'ers use a dabbing method for tiling, you are totally correct that an even well spread bed of adhesive is best for longevity. the easiest way to tell is to tap the tiles with your knuckle all over. the tiles that have a full backing will sound solid the tiles that don't will sound hollow. hope this helps you.

Always apply the adhesive to the wall in an even way and not to the tile. This way you fill voids in the wall. You can remove tile every so often to check full adhesion has taken place. And don' forget to use the correct size trowel for the job. good luck

Just tap the tiles if it sounds hollow it probably is correct method for large format tiles is evenly spread the wall in one direction then back butter the tile filling any mouldings on the back of the tile the rub the tile into the wall adh collapsing the trowel ridges giving 100% coverage never dot and dab
