What's the best product to stablise crumbling standstone walls?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

Hi several of my outside house bricks (made of sandstone) are crumbling away at a dramatic rate. These are primarily the bottom bricks of the outer wall of my cellar. The cellar is rather damp, although it has been tanked out recently, which I think hasn't helped the crumbling brickwork. I have tried applying stabilising solution to the bricks (Everbuild 406) which I thought might work. However, this has caused a paper like coating to form on top of the bricks which peels away on touch, taking the yellow colour of the sandstone and leaving a grey coloured stone. I am currently trying to find a stone mason to replace the really badly affected bricks, but would like to buy a product to protect the other bricks from crumbling? Is there anything that people would recommend? Thanks

Hi Phil On a property constructed from natural stone both internal and external surfaces must be allowed to breath, only lime based mortar and clay based paints should be used.A conventional modern day sand and cement tanking system should not be used.It is strongly recommended that a (Cavity Drain Membrane) is installed.
