How to prepare a newly plastered wall for tiles
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.58 PM
Hello, we've just had our bathroom newly plastered so I'm wondering how to prepare the walls before we tile them?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. My understanding is that pva shouldnt be used to prime any surface that is to be tiled in a bathroom, as pva is soluble in water. So the theory is that condensation from showering could weaken the bond (the pva is essentialy the sub-structure to the bond in this instance)
There are primers available from manafacturers such as bal and mapei.
My best advice would be to source a good independant tile supplier. Go along and chat to them about your project. They will advise you. ( well worth considering purchasing all that you need, adhesive, grout etc)

Hi,
It’s best practice to tile directly onto plaster board or a specific tile subsurface rather than skimming first.
If skimming was a necessity then it would be best to leave the tiling for a few weeks in order to allow it to dry properly and to check it isn’t going to crack or any loose spots appear.
If after this time everything is ok you’re good to tile directly onto the plaster or for wet areas I would recommend the use of a suitable waterproofing coating.

After The wall as been plastered PVA your surfaces first this will seal the plaster however If the wall as a base coat that as been applied from the brick some tilers will tile over that as it adheres better.
