Re-use laminate flooring

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.18 PM

Hello, We recently had an extension and after laying laminate flooring (the clicking type) it was realised that the floor was not levelled and the laminate flooring was lifted and the floor was levelled again. Now we need to install back the laminate flooring and a carpenter we wanted to hire said that he will not do it since it will not look the same as new, even if the boards do not appear damaged. Our builder (who covers the costs) says it will be fine. Online we find conflicting information (quickstep says it is fine to reuse, but somebody also says it will not look the same) Would you advise us to use the same laminate and expect it to look as new (as it was intended in the first place )? Thank you Thank you for your answers. I would now have another question, please. Even after levelling with self-levelling compound (adrex, as it was promoted to be fast drying) the floor is still not level, especially right at a position of an interior French door frame there seems to be a 5-7 mm drop relative to the floor in front and behind the door. afraid that after laminate is laid the doors will need to be cut to be able to open over the higher floor in front and as a result a sizeable gab will be under the door when closed. would the 5mm drop be masked by the laminate? or we should ask the builder to fix this before laying the laminate (which is done by the builder, who says it is fine). thank you

It depends how carefully it's been dis-assembled, and re-assembled. Providing the joints haven't been damaged (chipped/torn/bent/scratched), it should go back together almost like new and shouldn't look any different. Having said this the only way to 100% guarantee a perfect standard would be to replace the boards with good quality new ones.

It all depends on the quality of the flooring being used, As you stated quickstep have said that you can, in fact, relay the laminate once it has been lifted. This is easily done with quickstep as they have a really good click together system that allows the laminate to be lifted and then relaid at a later date. obviously, this comes at a price and hence why they are up there with one of the most expensive laminate floorings. The Less expensive laminate, click together system usually breaks when its being lifted, having said this if your boards are not damage and all edges ie the tongue and groove seem to be in good condition then there shouldn't be a problem relaying the floor back down

As long as you are carefull taking the laminate upas not to damage them ( which is fairly straight forward then the boards will fit back together as they were. Big firms will say replace for warranties but this is a fairly simple job for any laminate fitter.
