Old 70s architraves, doors and skirting - to replace or to not replace?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.42 PM

I have a flat that's not been decorated since it was built in the 70s (previously posted about this) and will be renovating it soon. The thick, chamfer style architraves are painted off white gloss and hold dark brown fire doors throughout (the dark brown kind). The skirting boards, are chamfer and extremely bulky. Both are made from decent quality solid wood. The skirting definitely needs to go as we will be plastering the walls, and laying new flooring. Plus, they're pretty hideous. We are thinking of replaching them with MDF ones, probably a less bulky chamfer style perhaps. Since the architraves and doors are made of good quality wood, are they worth salvaging (sanded and re-painted)? My fear is that any modern skirting boards will be too thin and against the old architraves and they would look very odd and not uniform at all. Or, would we be better off replacing the architraves and doors too with MDF ones? Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks a lot!

If the wood is good quality I would give a go of sanding and painting on a small area and see how it turns out. This can be time taking and requires a lot of sanding/filling to make a good job. It would be probably easier to replace with new for a easier painting job. If you can afford to replace with new then I would go with new for a more modern look to match your new skirting boards.

I would suggest to replace the architrave for the expense of new ones and the finish it will provide I would get it all done at once.

Definatly keep your old doors, getting cheap mdf doors that will warp in no time get broken etc,i would look into keeping all period features as old stlye timbers and features are the best quality and look far superior, look up a look dip stripping company, not as expensive as you would think and take them back to the origional, and either varnish or stain, the new skirtings would be fine as they will probably blend in with your wall colour anyway, hope this helps

If the arcs and doors are in good condition, I'd really try and save the skirting boards, it would really spoil the look of the property, if you just replaced the skirting board, seen this done loads of times, and it dosent look good, if not I'd replace all the arcs as well, it's your home and you want it to look, the best in can, hope this helps, thank you
