Painting on fresh skimmed walls

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

I had my bedroom skimmed walls and ceiling. After it dried I put on mist coat really watery with a large paint brush. However the walls and ceiling are not smooth I have started to sand down with 180 sandpaper. This is taking forever if I am to achieve a very smooth finish like a glass. Is the surface suppose to be super smooth Or can you feel surface texture? Plasterer says I haven't painted the walls properly and I should have got a professional in, I am very capable of painting have been decorating since I was a teenager. However I have never painted on skimmed walls.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. If you have used a non-vinyl emulsion watered down by about 25%, this will have sealed the wall adequately. Mist coating will not have added a texture to the plaster so your plasterer is wrong, UNLESS when painting the walls the paint was not mixed thoroughly and the thicker paint has dried on the surface. The plaster surface that you were left with before painting should be smooth. If glassy then a light sand before painting helps prevent the paint being pushed around. Sometimes the plaster can have a slightly sandy surface which can best be sanded after a mist coat. Follow this with a new mist coat to fill the areas the sanding has removed.

Hi being a plastering decorating myself it sounds like the plasterer hasn't trowel off properly to get a good finish there's no need to sand down newly plastered walls
