Neighbour's Cigarette Smoke in Bathroom and Cupboard

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

Hi there, I have recently bought a 1900s tenement flat in Glasgow and there is intermittently a very strong smell of cigarette smoke in the bathroom and the hallway cupboard (all along the same side of the flat). Sometimes it is minimal and at other times it is incredibly strong and overwhelming. It seems to be worse around any areas where there are holes in the wall (around pipes etc that go into the wall and the sealing around the pipe isn't tight - the owners before me renovated it themselves and weren't tradesmen). Other sources I guess could be the extractor fan in the bathroom or the floorboards in the cupboard - but I have cleaned both extensively. I am desperate to get it sorted and get rid of the smell as it is starting to come into the rest of the flat and can be overwhelming but I don't know where to start / which trade to ask or if its a common problem? Any help with be very much appreciated, thank you!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

hi Hannah cigarette smoke smell is quite tricky to get rid of, it sounds weird but even your walls and especially the ceiling will absorb it. you will probably need to deep clean everything. best thing to use is ammonia based cleaner or white vinegar. or the extreme will be to get an air purifier and sounds like you need to seal up them holes around the house. also try asking cleaners and also painters as they would have experience with this kind of problem
