Can burglars bypass cctv and alarm?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.18 PM

I have an alarm system with GSM and cctv cameras (wired). What happens when the burglar does the following? - switches off the wifi/ smashes the box/cuts the internet wire that feeds the dvr box etc. All live feeds will stop I think and the box will be unable to record? - cuts the main electric supply which is quite easy too. All he needs to do is find the box and just turn it off. That would turn off the wifi too. - cuts the telephone line so the alarm wont notify me or the authorities I know a burglar is always trying to do things in a rush and cctv and alarms can be a strong deterent. However am just thinking of the worst and if possible would make arrangements which would make the burglar’s life difficult. Any advise?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello if your Alarm system is set and set-up correctly it will send a signal via the GSM or DualCom all alarm system have a back up battery inside the system will send and intruder Signal if 1 sensors is triggered a confirm if a second sensor is triggered a mains fail if the power is switch off a tamper and a trouble signal if he tries to take the panel apart and the outside Bell will be ringing like crazy. on CCTV there is way to set it us so it will send recorded clips to your email one movement is detected so if its taken apart then image will already be sent also using back up batteries for you home systems would be a good option.

Use a UPS as a backup power for your recording gears and cameras and connect your system to internet by using a mobile phone with 4G on. K'ching! 😀 P.S. this is not my trade, but it happens to know some other things too 😀

Your alarm system should already have a backup battery and installing a UPS backup system is the best way for any interruption to the mains power supply. A 4g router which will work as a backup if the broadband is disconnected is normally a good starting point this should also be connected to the UPS backup battery system.

There's lots of ways to avoid this. Some have already been given. However, it is a good idea to have the DVR in the loft and then just run a cat 5 cable downstairs for the monitor and mouse. Alternatively, we sometimes fit dummy DVRs for people so even though they think they have disabled it, they haven't. We often also fit the DVR in the cupboard under the stairs and fit a very strong lock on it. Note that if you have a properly wired cctv system, it will still carry on recording even if the Internet it down. If they cut power, that's a different matter, but as stated above get a UPS. RE alarm system, most decent ones are designed to go off if the power is cut. Hope that helps.

The answer is yes all systems can be bypassed if a burglar has the knowledge and the tools. The average domestic user is unlikely to have a professional burglar target them. Alarms have back up power already, but be warned that most using apps these days use an internet connection and your router will not normally have UPS. UPS would be required to run your router/s and say your CCTV. CCTV whilst it is a may put some off, it isn't uncommon for the reckies they do before hand would show full face, but on the day of the breakin most of there face may be covered. This can often be a few weeks apart so having adequate recording time can be essential. Your NVR/DVR should be discreetly locked away making finding it and stealing it hard work. Report strange behaviour to the police and provide images, believe it or not this can help police no end. (reported two individuals recently and provided images to the police, given the police came the same day to see me, they are interested). It is unlikely you will have a significant power cut when a burglar is in the area, but not impossible. use immobilise.com to register items of value, mark up items so they can be traced back. I cant emphasise this one enough:- DO NOT POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA YOU ARE GOING ON HOLIDAY OR ARE GOING TO AN EVENT OR YOU ARE ON HOLIDAY OR AT AN EVENT. Tell people how good it was when you got back. There is more than enough data online to find out where you live, especially with the amount of data on some peoples profiles, let alone there name age and rough location to start with. Make sure your system is serviced and functioning regularly, I can walk down a street or drive past properties and see they may not be working properly.

You already have quite a few answers above: But if it's a genuine HIKVISION CCTV system, you would have notifications with images saved on your phone from the moment they reached the outside of your property. Your installer/supplier should always offer you "Redundancy Power" options which would continue to power your CCTV even in the event of a power outage. If a burglar were to cut through your Ethernet cables to disable the internet, you would lose future notifications. But a good installation would have a camera covering the point which your ethernet enters the wall, so the intruder is burnt onto your hard drive. DVR/NVR should also be installed in the loft so it's difficult & time-consuming for a thief to reach.

You are correct that if a burglar switches off the WiFi or smashes the box or cuts the internet wire that feeds the DVR box, then the live feeds will stop, and the box will be unable to record. Similarly, if the main electric supply is cut, the WiFi will turn off, and the cameras and DVR box will stop working. Also, if the telephone line is cut, the alarm system will not be able to notify you or the authorities. To make it difficult for burglars to disable your security system, you can take the following measures: Backup Power Supply: Install a backup power supply for your security system, such as a battery backup or a generator. This will ensure that your system continues to function even if the main power supply is cut. Additional Sensors: Install additional sensors on windows and doors, which trigger the alarm if they are opened or broken. This will ensure that even if the burglar cuts the telephone line or disables the WiFi, the alarm will still go off. Tamper-Proofing: Make sure that the DVR box and other components of your security system are installed in a secure location and are tamper-proof. This will make it difficult for the burglar to disable the system. Cloud Storage: Use cloud storage to back up your CCTV footage, so even if the DVR box is damaged or stolen, the footage will still be available. Professional Monitoring: Consider professional monitoring for your security system. This way, even if the burglar cuts the telephone line or disables the WiFi, the monitoring company will still be able to notify the authorities. Keep It Hidden: Keep your security system components hidden and out of sight, making it more difficult for burglars to locate and disable them. Dummy Cameras: Install dummy cameras alongside your actual cameras to deter burglars. While these won't record anything, they can give the impression that your property is being monitored, which may be enough to discourage some burglars. These measures can make it more difficult for burglars to disable your security system and may deter them from targeting your property in the first place.
