Concrete and steel lintels around all 4 sides of windows are cracked and rusting

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.18 PM

Ive just bought a 1949 ex council 3 bed semi in need of replacement double glazing. Most of the windows are surrounded by a concrete lintel on all 4 sides. The lintels have split due to water ingress and the steel reinforcement rusting. Can modern double glazing replace these (make the window spaces larger) assuming they can be structurally supporting, or does this require replacing before / during double glazing install. If this turns out to be a big job, I may well look at opening up a couple of windows to make them a little larger. See here for photos https://www.mybuilder.com/myjobs/job/3801110/view Thanks O

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

As far as good, but as I see it (without a picture of the lintels in front of me) they need to be replaced with new better version of lintels. It might turn up to be a big job so therefore you'll get to widen them windows 😀. All the best.
