Damp Proofing

If wall is wet internally , does it need to be stripped down to be professionally dried?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.18 PM

Insurance have suggested we should strip out the plaster and use drying equipment to dry the brick walls of moisture (its been tested and reading shows its soaked). Is this really necessary? Can I just paint over the walls to cover all the damp stains caused by the leak? The walls are no longer wet when we touch them

A damp wall cannot be painted. The damp will have to be rectified before painting.

you really need it to be dried out first, adding water.liquid. i.e. paint to a damp surface is never really a good idea

Dependant on how wet and how long the wall has been damp will determine if the plaster needs to be taken off to reveal the brickwork. If the flood was minor, and the cause of the flood rectified quickly, the plaster and wall may dry out with de humidifiers and the wall can be painted. However, if the floor was major, and possibly long standing, the plaster will become contaminated. Even after the cause of the flood has been rectified, the plaster may appear to be surface dry but will still be damp and the only option is to remove back to brickwork, dry out wall and plaster back. A sand and cement render incorporating a waterproofer is usually recommended with severe flooding but this is dependant on the construction of the building. Hope this helps.
