Tiling

Tile Laying starting points

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

Hi. I am retiling my kitchen splashback area. There is one long wall from the door over cupboard, stove and sink area with a window sill involved and then a shorter wall under cupboards. I am using a rectangular tile along the top and then diamond patterned squares below. My question is where do i start tiling from, where is my first line? Do i start from the corner and if so, do i cut the rectangular tile in half and wrap it or put ful tiles in, dotto with the diamond pattern. Many thanks.

Find the middle of the wall (length ways) and as long as your worktop is level put your first tile on that line half and half then way out in both directions so you have even cuts both ends this will look even to the eye. Also all your cut will be under cupboard so out of eye-line. With the diamond one put top and bottom points on your centre line. So start with checking your worktop is level the find the centre of the wall then draw a true line up the centre and start here.

Finding the middle of the wall is one way, but if the wall has a feature like an extractor hood, centre this and work from there. Ensure the worktop is level, if not set a whole tile at its lowest point.
