Is my window up to building regs

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

I have purchased a window from a company that I'm concerned may be a cowboy outfit. The windows are supposed to be acoustic and whilst the glass is thicker on one side than the other there are no kite marks to prove its acoustic and no marks to show that it's safety glass. Would this pass building regs and are these marks necessary? Thanks

Building regulations cover a number of approved documents which are very black and white. In the case of safety glazing (previously document N, now approved document K: Safety glass must be fitted in all doors, windows or glazed areas that are lower than 800mm from the inside floor level. It must be used in any door where glass is wholly or partially within 1500mm from floor level. Where glazing is adjacent to doors, windows or side panels wholly or partially within 300mm of the edge of a door and which is also wholly or partially within 1500mm from floor level must be safety glass. Only glass which is either toughened or laminated is considered to be safety glass, and will show a Kitemark stamped in the corner to reassure you that it is approved to British Standard BS 6206 for quality. So in answer to your question, simply put, no kitemark = no safety glass This would instantly fail an inspection from LABC or any approved self certification body, such as Certass or Fensa. Ther may be a difference between a company claiming to installing safety glazing and HAVING to install safety glazing. I would check to ensure that building regs dictate it's use first. Acoustic glass such as Pilkington Optithon as far as I remember does not carry any markings on the glass to prove - other than the glass label which should have been attached prior to installation.

Acoustic glass is lamitate on one side of the double glazed unit (usually thicker) and the other side would be toughened. The toughened glass will have a kite mark in one or two of the corners. Hope this helps Thanks Adam
