Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

Hi is it normal for concrete fence posts and gravel boards to crack and crumble in just over 12months ? Had to replace one section this winter after 6 months of being fitted now every post has cracks aprox 20 posts . Can cheap fencing be bought and fitted by tradesmen or could mine be a dodgy batch - orig work by tradesperson who wont answer questions to my self and next door so cant get any help .have any advice would be good as stuck with poor dangerous fencing and out of pocket by over a thousand pounds thanks . Work done by robert leach arbman ltd ripped off and ignored .

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

OK...Concrete, well then the below answer re concrete applies. You should have a guarantee from the contractor ours is 5 years. If what you say is correct the posts ARE faulty, but as nobody makes posts that crumble the contractor has to replace them. Go on-line fill out a County Court Summons for the amount that you paid and send it off, that will make the Contractor act either by defending the claim or putting it right, either way you win. Would you like to provide more information when you say crumble that implies concrete post is that correct? No concrete post should crumble even if I over 10 years old and yours is only one year old? Wooden posts, pressure treated or oak May naturally split but as the wood is so tough it does not affect the strength of the post? From your question it is not clear whether you have been fitted with cheap posts or want to replace them with cheap posts can you provide more information please and then I can help better?

I had a problem with wet cast concrete posts and gravel boards cracking on the truck and even when moving them to erect fencing. It’s possible to physically break both by force. Concrete gets stronger with age and I suspect yours were recently cast and erected whilst young. As a result i refuse to use these wet cast posts etc. I only use stronger stylecast concrete fencing. Easy way to distinguish them. Wet casts are smooth whitish colour. stylecast are dark grey and not smooth. I’ve even had 6ft high fence using 8ft concrete wet cast posts snap off in strong wind. So not used them since.

It all depends if the a suppliers and fitters or just subcontractors who source materials elsewhere. If this is the case and they was more than likely purchased to soon after coming out the cast oven with not a lot of drying time involved, this can be noted on the shape of the posts and Gb’s they would be unusually out of shape. Unfortunately the only best resolution if you are that worried would be to reinstall new posts from a better suppliers.

We come across this problem once we put it down to the supplier , where the concrete was not dry properly and rushed out . We took concrete posts concrete gravel boards from the yard to site when we checked half the posters and half the gravel boards were cracked but they were perfect once we placed them on the back of the truck they cracked on transporting them so we looked for a better supplier and we’ve never had a problem since we change supplier . We have put concrete posters up for clients over 20 years ago and not one has cracked yet so my opinion it comes down to the manufacturer .

Firstly I wouldn't have used this type of fencing anyway with solid closeboard being so much stronger, longer lasting and more aesthetically pleasing but as you (like many) did have this I will explain a few things. The only posts to use are the thinner grey pressed stroncast posts! These are really good and factory pressed with strict ingredients like galvanised rod bars that won't rust and make the post explode (crack) The chunky heavy white posts are made usually in some yard from a cement mixer and contain cigarette butts and junk (I know from experience) the cement mix can vary in strength and also the 4 reinforcement bars are mild steel which when it rains soaks them which starts the rusting process hence the posts failing!! In the stroncast (grey) posts they use a bar spacer which keeps the bars from being too close to the surface but in the white ones the bars are just placed anywhere as most people making them have little care.. simple resolve use grey pressed posts or better still 4 by 4 wooden tantalised posts. Sadly you are going to end up needing a new fence as there's no fix-sorry

It sounds like a casting issue rather than a fitting issue however the tradesperson would have known this when fitting and should have raised this with supplier and notified you 👍🏻

It’s sounds to me as if that is a bad supply of materials not so much a fitting issue although the tradesmen should have came and at least had a conversation about the problem next time you hire ask for a guarantee on the work being done ours is up to 10 years

If the posts and gravel boards havnt been cured properly after being poured into the moulds (happened loads during covid as they couldn’t supply quick enough) then they will crack and chip easily, cold weather hot weather. You can normally tell if that’s the case when you’re loading them up too as they are really brittle
